Underscore Studios is a London and South West based Not-for-Profit Social Enterprise working between Film, Events and Education.

We’re committed to increasing accessibility in the arts for working-class creators. Alongside creating original work, we continue to be an affordable alternative to traditional creative training, many of which remain out of reach for emerging talent.

We run film workshops, the upcoming Underscore Film Fund, Underscore Cinema, and provide affordable script coverage — each designed to support working-class filmmakers across the UK.

As part of the Creative UK Screen Launchpad programme and with support from the BFI, we’re helping working-class storytellers develop their craft and find their community.

What do we mean by Working-Class?

The Arts industry is still wrestling with finding the “right” way to define the term working-class. In some instances, you may come across surveys that ask you what your parents did for a living or whether they went to university or not etc.

The term Working-class can mean different things but for us at Underscore Studios being working-class may mean:

  1. Growing up on low income with little to no access to wealth

  2. Growing up, you likely qualified for free school meals

  3. Little to no connections, (familial or otherwise) to people with high-income, professional, or powerful jobs

The list above comes from the personal understanding of being working-class but it is by no means set in stone.

One of the ways we may help amplify working-class voices is by building upon our collective understanding.
